GARDENING TIPS & USEFUL LINKS

Owner-operator Dave Wolinsky prepares a row for planting.

Gardening Tips

  • Plant trees along with inoculated mycorrhizal mushroom species (underground networking-style fungi) in order to strengthen the tree's roots and generally improve the health of both organisms. Mycorrhizal mushrooms help the tree by breaking down lignin-cellulose in the tree and making more nutrients available to the tree. In exchange, the mushrooms gets energy-rich sugars from the tree. This is a symbiotic, or mutually beneficial, relationship.

  • To kill off undesirable plants and weeds, shovel underneath the roots and flip the chunk of ground over, burying the leaves. This saves time and lets the weed decompose into the soil, generally enriching it. Just don't dig too deep or you might disrupt the delicate balance of the topsoil's nutrients. Deep ground soil is generally not as suitable for growing, being deprived of centuries of carbon-rich organisms while it dwelt beneath the surface. The image below demonstrates how soil makeup changes drastically as you move down into the Earth. Keeping these areas intact is fundamental for good soil health and productivity.
